Question regarding Qt5's freetype dependency

Hi devs, as discussed in [1] I was puzzled that it is possible to build Qt5 without freetype support, which has been actually done on the OSX/CI system atm. The question is, would Qt5 be missing this for KF5 at some stage? What do you suggest, should one rather install this library per default
