I just built it successfully in a 12.1 poudriere.
My best guess still is, that you ran out of memory :)

poudriere jail is 12-stable
the port isn't being built with special options, just the defaults.

How much memory is needed?
system has 32GB RAM and 1x 4GB swap partition and 2 x 16GB swapfiles.
Nothing about OOM in /var/log/messages
