@Mauro: please, try this: select one note and press ESC, repeat the operation
for all visible notes on all desktop. Logout and re-login. Does the problem
occour again?

Done. It works.
The problem occurs only with the right click on the tray icon, selecting hide
all notes.

No, there is no easy way to turn it off. You have to edit the KMail config
file manually.
This seems to be KDE's usual way of dealing with bug reports about UI changes.
