Additional information:
I removed the spam checker and bogofilter - no effect. Then I turned off ALL
mail servers except GMAIL - No effect. Then I logged into GMAIL via webmail
and started deleting

I'll check it later on the device. It's a settings problem. Easy to solve on
the desktop with akonadiconsole but not on the device. The folder property
noselect was set to 1 for inbox.
