kwallet.
Very wierd. Perhaps a bug in your old kwallet.

I had two SMTP servers with passwords in the mailtransports file. I deleted
both from kwallet, quit kmail, and stopped KDE PIM

After the initial sync is complete, there's also periodic syncs (according to
Akonadi) that don't generate network traffic but burn the CPU. Akonadi
console's debug log shows tons of messages like
