I think each software should be responsible for its own bugs. If the bug is in
Owncloud, just fix Owncloud and do not make miserable other projects because of
your faults.

I started to look into this a while back, but then real lifeĀ® got in the way.
It should be possible to take conflict resolution from google resource and port
it to the Dav resource, but someone has to do it

This will fix the 401 indeed.
Because the resource was offline, when it comes back online the first thing it
tries to do is commit to the server the changes.
