One more detail, but an important one: one of my application programs had
inadvertently filled up /home. This would accoutn for all the erratic behavior
of Kmail.

However, the little popup windows that show Name, Date, etc., are working
normally, even for the message that I originally could not access.

After a few minutes, Kmail has ceased to access all messages. It also appears
to be storing unlimited duplicates of new messages.
