Just to add a bit more info: The message preview pane works as expected. That
is, it loads external images for html messages. But if you double-click on a
message to open a separate window, the message window fails

This annoying problem is still present with plasma 5.18.0 and Kontact version

Fixed for me as well after upgrading tumbleweed today, which included 5.11.0.

Deleting my address book and re-adding it worked for me too. (I rebooted after
deleting the address book, and before re-adding it.)

I managed to solve my problem. in /home/.config there's a file called kmail2rc.
I searched the file for "html' and found the following line in several
