I now had the case that Konqueror also did not show the red lines even though
the words were wrong (and the context menu offered corrections), so that bug
does not seem to be KMail

I have the same problem, too - Kubuntu 9.04 RC with KDE 4.2.2.
Of course, the fact that KMail says Bad passphrase instead of a proper error

With KDE 4.2.2, the situation with the regard to this problem got worse: In
KDE3, at some point it started correctly opening messages when I double-click

I found another application which can use spell checking: Kopete. It shows the
same behaviour as the others, but does not have a spell checking options window
so it can not be repaired
