works just as good, probably a bit better: I can plug-in an external

This bug very clearly has nothing at all to do with the BIOS.
Christopher, it is inappropriate to ask bug submitters to test with a
new BIOS for bugs like this - the BIOS is entirely unrelated to the
network filesystem layer, and if upgrading the BIOS did have any effect,
it would be *irrelevant* t
You do know that no one knows what the fix is, only that it is in 3.12?
You can see that Timo gave up trying to find it in mid-November. If
Ubuntu is actually going to figure out the fix and backport it, then go

I don't. This was on my primary workstation running Saucy and because I
needed the drive, I couldn't just sit on it while debugging this. So I
formatted it in ext4 as noted above, and worked around the root
ownership.
I'm pretty sure the permissions thing when it was formatted NTFS is d
Yes, it is still an issue on ubuntu 13.10. (No proprietary NVidia driver
installed.) I will test the problem on the latest development version of
ubuntu.
The issue is worse than you might expect. I often need to read and edit
documents and those use a white background (typically PDF documents).
