I've migrated to the LST Enablement Stack and after a few days agree
that this seems to have been resolved with the newer kernel and xorg
components (although it's hard to know for sure - on the 3.16 kernel I
think I would have had a problem by now, however).

The only explanation I can find for this bug is a BIOS flaw. I would try
to update the BIOS from the manufacturer website and see if the bug goes
away.
After doing so, or after finding that updating is not possible, please

a horizontally hashed wallpaper which used to be corrected by doing
