Has this issue been resolved? I was able to fix this issue with the fix
suggested in the description but unfortunately, it had the effect of
preventing the computer from suspending. I've been living with this

This seems to be a bug in gcc itself. It should automatically disable
PIE when -mcmodel=kernel or when __KERNEL__ is passed in a header.
Attempts to compile using no PIE command line flags don't work either.
It's as if it's not allowing it to be turned back off.

I've been reading about it because I had the same problem when trying to load
64 bit linux mint OS from an USB stick and it seems that it happens with
Gigabyte motherboards... (I have Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3)
