I've tried manually copy the binary blobs into /boot and the rainbow
square disappeared. And when the power is not enough it displayed a
"lightning" icon. So if we rebuild an image based on the gadget in edge
channel we should be able to fix the problem.

As you indicated it seems that an actual allocation problem occurred on:

I was experimenting similar behaviour using kernel 4.6.0 x86_64 (linux
mint + cinnamon).
After upgrading to 4.8.0-040800-generic x86_64 seems fine now.
