I installed the 16.04 HWE option on the problematic HP 6710b, but it has had no
effect on the wifi.
It did cause a black-screen problem and drm_wait messages, worked around by
disabling SVIDEO in grub.

Never mind, @Alexander. I managed to find out myself. As it may be
useful to others, I will explain how it's done. I created a small bash
script, e.g. cougar_keyboard.sh, with the following contents:

I will try to test it on Monday as I have a pretty slow uplink where I
am currently.
Hopefully, I will get back to my 5 GHz network on Thursday to do a
proper comparison with the data I had before.
