I am also having this issue, system fully updated, nvidia-driver-396,
GTX 1050Ti, kernel 4.15.0-33-generic. Also happens with nvidia-
driver-390. The fix for me was #123:
sudo service gdm stop ; sleep 5 ; sudo service gdm start
This is definitely not fixed.
