I forgot to mention that before demonstrating that "Night Light" and
"Dim screen when inactive", I upgraded to the latest BIOS from Lenovo on
20 March (a day prior to posting #16 and before turning off the dimming
features). It is the Lenovo 85UJ25US (1.46) BIOS, which is an upgrade
from 8BET55WW
By the way, this issue appeared on my machine, which is a Lenovo W520.
I have turned off automatic suspend while plugged in. I need it to run
financial calculations overnight. And, I have increased the battery
power delay to 30m. Though that is neither here nor there.

We are also affected by this bug.
Adding linux-meta in the loop because a simple solution could be to now
add a tighter dependency on the linux-image-4.4.0-*-generic package,
that means linux-base (>= 4.5ubuntu1~16.04.1).

Note : if NUM_OF_VFS is set to 32, VF creation works fine. If it's set
to 64 or above, VF creation fails. I haven't tested in between.

For the Mellanox NIC MT27800 (MCX556M-ECAT-S25 to be precise), the
maximum number of VF per PF can be configured in the firmware, by
running e.g. :
$ sudo mstconfig -d 32:00.1 set NUM_OF_VFS=127
If I set this NUM_OF_VFS to 64 or more, the creation of even a single VF
