I noticed that the repo now has kernel 4.4.0-93 available- i tried that but it did not work either - it also seemed to set SMT to 8 which caused me a few problems until i realized what it did. I rebooted with kernel 4.4.0.94 and all is well again (after I set SMT to off) Hopefully the new kernel

not able to run apport-collect It appears that the latest upstream stable kernel is v4.4.83 -- I have that installed and it is ok- no issues- the problem does not exist in this kernel. However, a apt update installed 4.4.0-92 - this one did have issues. I have 9 more systems to update- it
