I let the hung process sit for some hours (2-4) and when I came back I found the following logged to the console: sudo dpkg --configure -a Setting up linux-image-extra-4.8.0-44-generic (4.8.0-44.47) ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal 4.8.0-44-generic /boot/vmlinuz-4.
