I'm verifying for trusty and its taking sometime because looks like
system still hangs on shutdown. I have generated a kdump (from a
watchdog timer) in the exact moment trusty is hanging on shutdown to see
why BUT crash can't handle a kdump from this new kernel and I still
don't know why. Testing
@kamalmostafa - Adding another datapoint: installed 4.4.0-117.141 on a
vm guest on ESXi 6.0 on a host running Intel Xeon CPU E5-2695 v4
(Broadwell) and the issue still occurs. Disabling the apparmor profile
for sssd allows boot to complete and restores sssd functionality.

This issue is not limited to EC2. I'm running artful on a Dell Optiplex
5040 with an i5-6500 CPU (which is Skylake); I've just installed sssd
and hit the full system freeze. Even REISUB didn't work!

the only thing needed for the bug referenced here, is the line (already
commented on the Patrick's fix):
ln -s /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libz.so.1 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1/libz.so.1
The other stuff in the fix relates to patch the modules, but has nothing
to do with the problem of this thread,
I keep experiencing this issue, using Ubuntu 17.10, an Intel Core
i3-5005U (with Intel HD 5500). It appears most often when a new
notification comes in (Slack/Spotify) and the lockscreen is visible.

Tried it on 4.16-rc1 and 4.16-rc2 and it was the same. Resume from suspend
worked on 4.15 but not on 4.16 and also on 4.15-rc9 i was able to get a
half-working (cursor movement/tap, but no left/right buttons) touchpad
Adding -colorauto patch to ip. It allows the behavior requested.
Tested build and install on bionic. Will in parallel work on sending
the patch upstream.
