I am having the same issues even with the newer Kernel,
4.4.0-79-generic.
Like others have mentioned above, I can mess with the settings and
sometimes "it gets it" and other times it just causes the whole machine
to lock up and I have to force reboot it. Even when the monitors do
show up in xrand

I would just like to chime in that unlike silbs, this has become more
frequent for me. I have already rebooted my machine three times today.
Today I turned off allowing my machine to automatically lock or turn off
the screen. Hopefully that will stave off the problem until a fix is

One of our Production systems crashed with the following kernel.log

This was a one time event, and I don't know of a way to replicate it at
this time. Monitors of the box showed it was largely idle at the time
the bug exhibited itself. VMware reported repeated high/low CPU
consumption from the time of the bug until it was forced off and

I am attempting to set up working hibernation in Linux (Which I define
as hibernation that works no matter how full my RAM and swap are) and
have found it to be impossible with any of the hibernation systems. this
bug is about the failure using the "kernel" method, which is at
"xen:balloon: reserve_additional_memory: add_memory() failed: -17" can
only occur in HVM guests if the balloon target is set above the maximum
allowed by the guest's memory map.
This is likely a bug in the EC2 toolstack. Perhaps this was introduced
as a workaround for the problem fixed by c275a57f
Can you try this patch?

xen/balloon: cancel ballooning if adding new memory failed
If the balloon driver is adding additional memory regions to the
balloon and add_memory() fails it will likely continuously fail so
cancel the balloon operation.

So Timo tested and confirmed the bug too. And also that using
options snd-hda-intel power_save_controller=N
...in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf also fixes the issue, and is less
invasive than jackpoll_ms=500. The question is if using the above
power_save_controller change causes wors

Unfortunately testing with a wattage meter on AC power will not work.
The power saving is disabled when on AC power anyhow, it is only enabled
when on battery power (and that's why we have the bug only when on
battery power too).
