I have the same exact issue on Acer Aspire One A110 (ZG5). In my case this happened after upgrade from 17.04 to 17.10. The workarounds are either pass nomodeset option to kernel at boot, or just choose the previous kernel (4.10 in my case). The latter solution gives me correct 1024x600 resolution
