Indeed there was - in /etc/modprobe.d for r8168-dkms. I ran sudo apt-get
purge --auto-remove r8168-dkms
and all is working as it should.

r8168 is not there. It was when I was trying to get things working but I
removed it.
root@richard-ubuntu:~# lsmod

This is a regression. All was fine before upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04.
Also worth noting is that previously, wired connections were named eg Realtek
Ethernet Connected, Intel Ethernet Connected instead of PCI Ethernet Connected
and Ethernet Connected
