So. I pinned the working kernel version, updated everything, and like a
moron also updated the Nvidia drivers from the graphics-drivers ppa, in
readiness to try the upstream kernel version. Whoops. Now it no longer
logged in at all, freezing in the same place it used to freeze when

lid) and reopening will take me to the 'swipe up' screen; upon swiping
up, the session ends and I end back at the login screen. Does not
