Basically I needed to set the country for iw:
sudo iw reg set US
By this I passed from:
~$ iw reg get
country 00: DFS-UNSET
(2402 - 2472 @ 40),
Sorry, I have been busy for some time and in the meantime I used my workaround,
which worked quite fine. Also, something has changed since then, as now I don't
even have to use that workaround to get the wifi work as expected.

First some context, after a gpu hang I ran into problems with the intel
graphics driver with black screen after opening a session, or so I
thought, and temporally used in grub options nomodeset or
i915.modeset=0.
This caused some issues with the screen resolution, but while
