Solution in post 294 fixed the problem on our (many) Lenovo G40-30
laptops. Everything back to normal. Right now, I am installing another
distro (Peppermint 8) until Ubuntu 17.10 iso is fixed.
Million thanks to those who fixed the issue without the need for any
hardware repair or replacement.

There is no iso for a lot of Lenovo models. For instance, for Lenovo
G40-30, there is only an .exe file, that is only compatible with Windows
8.

@anthonywong Thank you for your reply. Please allow me to say that after
contacting Lenovo to request support and notify them about the current
problem, they clearly stated that they are unaware of the issue and that
absolutely no report has been made to Lenovo. This is what worries me.
They refuse
Contacting the vendor and sending computers in, means paying a lot of
money for something that the end-users haven't caused on their hardware.
What is more, Lenovo clearly states that Linux is unsupported so, their
options are limited in terms of providing support. That is why they have

No, the problem persists, even after upgrading to the latest kernel. The
last version of Ubuntu and its derivatives that worked fine was 12.04.

Thank you for replying. Unfortunately, I do not understand at all how to
do the whole procedure. My knowledge of linux is rather limited to user
level and I am not allowed to change the os currently installed, as this
is a laptop used for business.
Would there be any other way to approach the issu
I used 12.04 for a year, and everything worked fine. The problems
started in version 13.10 onwards. I hope that helps. If you want, I can
