I can confirm this bug still exists in 13.10.
On my current machine, it has existed for years now, but it does not
seem to be a problem on other machines I have.
Maybe this is an old broken setting that is never deleted during upgrades? (I
haven't done a reinstall since 10.04, only upgrades).

I assume the NVidia driver I got from the NVidia homepage caused the
problem when it was superseded by the latest drivers from the
repository.
System was without graphics at reboot, but "sudo apt-get install -f"
resolved everything peacefully. Now everything works. Thanks!
