I thought I might have to get into Grub to select mainline kernel (do I?), but either way right now the machine boots up fine with the DVD drive in. Although when booting I get the messages shown in the attached screenshot about 'bootconfig' being found on the command line, but no bootconfig

OK, so last night I shut down, inserted the DVD drive and then switched on again. Then I left it overnight. Was still stuck in the morning. Then I powered off using Alt+Fn+PrtSc, s, u, o, took the drive out and powered on again. It still got stuck. But then rebooted with Alt+Fn+PrtSc, s, u, b,
