Well, I just updated to 4.4.0-45 (the packaged ubuntu kernel) and it
seems the problem has gone away. So perhaps safe to close?

After updating the kernel to 4.4.0-22 the trackpad on my MacBook Air no longer
works.
It looks like the usbmouse driver loads first and associates with the touchpad,
and this prevents the bcm5974 module from acquiring the hardware.
