My issues were fixed by changing the graphics driver under the additional
drivers programme to: fglrx
(not updates - that still didn't work for me)
Did not require a reboot to start using and no problems since switching
- quick fix for anyone else having the same issues,

This is a bizarre bug and I have changed RAM and reseated CPU as I
thought it was hardware related.
