Actually, the backlight was just off by default. There's also a bit of
lag when changing brightness in Ubuntu that wasn't there before the
firmware upgrade, and the EFI menu is garbled when booting a live image,
but the system works fine besides that. Will get back to some tests.

It's really a bit too easy to miss that I can only get 3.8.8/3.8.9/...
specifically if I clone stable/linux-stable.git instead of
torvalds/linux.git, and I can't edit the linked wiki pages to fix that.
Anyway, it doesn't look like I'll need to go through too many commits.
