fixed this by adding libata.force=noncq to the grub config. i totally forgot that i did that with my first install. the laptop now boots in 7 seconds from the moment of the ubuntu password boot screen, to the desktop. before that it took way over one minute. it works every time! i also use the

christopher, i now tried for several hours to update the bios. the windows 7 repair disk didn't execute the bios exe. i did several tries with freedos and read around the internet. is it really essential to update the bios, the changelog is here: What does it fix? Update CPU micro code to fix

update: the windows 7 x64 live usb worked after all. that unpacked bat worked. after booting ubuntu again, it failed me with the first error again: ... alert! /dev/mapper/ubuntu-vg-root does not exist ... several tries later, it finally boots, nothing changed. here is what i (obviously now)
