Hangs booting with
Checking in with the same exact issue as Captain Chaos. Attempting to
install Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10, 13.10 and Debian 7.1.0 on an MSI GS70 2OD.
VGA: Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M/2GB GDDR5
HDD: 750GB 7200RPM+128GB SSD
Installs were attempted via USB as well as via CDROM.

Captain Chaos, ouf my bad. I was scanning for VGA compatible
controller and the nvidia card is 3D controller (first time I've seen
it this way).
Despite this, in Raring with stock Ubuntu kernel, if you remove the non-default
kernel parameters:
acpi_osi=!Windows 2012 acpi_backlight=vendor
does
