Thanks Christopher, in the meanwhile I reinstalled Ubuntu 13.10 and tested a few kernel versions. The problem appeared upstream starting from kernel version 3.12.x onward. So I reinstalled again 14.04 and I downgraded to kernel version v3.11.10.13-saucy, which is not affected by this bug- --
