For the upstream kernel within 14.04.5 the problem is happening again.
In the kernel log I found issues with the i915 driver:
[drm:intel_dp_link_training_clock_recovery [i915]] *ERROR* too many full
retries, give up
[drm:intel_wait_ddi_buf_idle [i915]] *ERROR* Timeout waiting for DDI BUF B idle
Seems to be fixed in the 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) Beta 1. I assume the fix
will make its way through the final release.

Elitebook 840 G1 here with HP 2013 UltraSlim-Docking Station.
I was able to connect and recognize the monitor via Docking Station,
however the graphics are flickering and mouse seems to freeze when
moving fast.
Also there are problems when dragging windows to the sides of the screen
for resizing
Same for me, it isn't working at all. I use hp zbook 14 with LinuxMint
17.3

as suggested, I tried to install the latest v3.17 kernel[0] in Ubuntu 14.10.
Hardware:
elitebook 840
hp ultraslim docking station 2013
Software Ubuntu 14.10
- with both the default kernel and the 3.17
- without using AMD drivers
- installing the drivers available in the Additional Drive
I have the same issue.
My configuration:
- Ubuntu 14.04, with all updates
- EliteBook 840 G1 connected to a HP ultraslim docking station 2013.
- 1 HP z27i connected to the DP of the docking
- xserver-xorg-video-ati

In addition to the internal DP the VGA Port of Docking Station works as well
fine (so finally only the 2 DPs of the Docking Station don't work).
Connecting my monitor the the VGA Port of the Docking Station is for me an
"acceptable" work-around until AMD (or HP) have fixed this issue.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
