stl, for regression testing purposes, could you please test for this in
12.04.0 with kernel 3.2.x (not 12.04.3 or some other variant) via http
://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/ and advise to the results?

stl, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please
report this problem to the appropriate mailing list (linux-acpi) by
following the instructions _verbatim_ at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel ?
Please provide a direct URL to your e-mail to the mailing list once you
no longer using nvidia graphics due to graphics problems on 3.18

stl, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the
very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant
for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream
can you clarify whether you mean
the daily tip of Linus' linux kernel source tree,
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
or http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18-vivid/
i have tested the latest kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline
to clarify 3.18 does not fix the problem and i have followed the on
wiki instructions for opening an upstream bug
i will report if i hear from upstream

stl, unfortunately, not all the necessary information has been included
to report this upstream without them asking even more followup
questions.
Hence, just to clarify, did this problem not occur in a release prior
to Trusty?
As well, could you please provide the missing information following
