Yes Ralph, you are correct as I got confirmation from Conniccal today
that it is not a grub problem and that in fact it is the 3.16.0.36
kernel that is not compatible with grub 2 beta~ which they bounced on us
recently.
As I said I just deleted all 3.16 kernels off my system using MC

It is a kernel issue.
If you start the system from the sub menu with kernel 3.16.0.34 system will
boot into login screen.
Using kernel 3.16.0.36 will cause a system hang on bootup at the point

It's definitly the kernel version that popped up after the update I did
2 nights ago. now that I have removed 3.16.0.36 ...I am able to log on
as normal on to 3.16.0.34.
After the updates I can't log into the 3.16.0.36 kernel version at all
therefore I am unable to get you the ' apport -collect..
Please run 'apport-collect 1450905' from a terminal on your system, to
collect information about which kernel you're running that may be
causing the problem. Please also explain in detail what happens when
you say the laptop "will not boot up properly".
