Confirmed that the new linux-image gets a working initrd and boots, even
without -extra installed:
adconrad@kernel-test:~$ dpkg -l linux-image-extra\*
dpkg-query: no packages found matching linux-image-extra*
adconrad@kernel-test:~$ uname -a
Linux kernel-test 4.3.0-1-generic #10-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec
And the initrd:
adconrad@kernel-test:~$ lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img-4.3.0-1-generic | grep ibmv
lib/modules/4.3.0-1-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/ibm/ibmveth.ko
lib/modules/4.3.0-1-generic/kernel/drivers/scsi/ibmvscsi

Without this images will become unbootable.
