Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.14 kernel[0].

v4.14-rc6 also work? It would be good to know to narrow down if we can

Ah, I see. Yes, v4.14-rc6 allows me to enter the disk password, however
wifi does not work: Ubuntu thinks the laptop has no wifi capability.

It either worked then or I booted the wrong kernel. 4.10.0-38 and
today's 4.10.0-39 are not working, so I am back to using in
4.9.45-040945 order to be able to access the machine.
