Same issue with Gateway LT20 Netbook (Intel 945GM chipset and 1024x600 display)
running Xubuntu 16.04
Problem began with latest update to Linux 4.13.0-45-generic kernel.
Using recovery mode barely usable but stretches 800x600 across the display.
Booting with 4.10.0-42-generic eliminates the proble

Can you boot if you select "Recovery Mode" from the GRUB menu? You can
get to the GRUB menu by holding the SHIFT key after poweron and seeing
the BIOS screen.
