To add some additional information... I upgraded the BIOS of the machine to the latest, plugged in the TB display and rebooted to -33. The fan spun up and it didn't pass beyond C3. I unplugged the TB display and it then progressed all the way to C7 so it appears to be a TB issue. Kai- Heng is

Looking at the powerstat data it is also interesting to note that your machine is consuming a lot of CPU, ~50% userspace, ~29% kernel. It may be worth checking to see if there are any rouge processes running using top or htop to see if that's also contributing to the machine busy state. -- You

The -23 kernel doesn't seem to be better. In general on a well-behaves Intel SoC it should reach Package C8. I _guess_ it's because there's something connect to Thunderbolt. Can you please try unplug the "Cable Matters USB-C Video Cable" device from thunderbolt port, and see if the SoC can reach

So, I've spent some time on this, and I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of answers. I know that -9 is awful. I've booted them all and ran powerstat on all of them logged into the desktop with nothing extra running. Attached is a tar file with the results of all of the kernels I have installed,

Hi Dean, I've built 4 kernels at different parts of the 5.4. development stage for a quick check to see when the issue appeared. This should allow me to hone in on the i915 changes that are pertinent to this regressions. Please test these and let me know the fan results.

Lets do some simple sanity checking to begin with to try to narrow this down. Can you install and test kernel 5.4.0-18 using: sudo apt install linux-image-5.4.0-18-generic ..and check if this runs OK with the fans and please sanity check the kernel is the right one using name -r if the fans
