Interestingly, the information about nomodeset cannot be found in the [Ubuntu Wiki about kernel debugging](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging). I had to resort to [AskUbuntu](https://askubuntu.com/questions/207175/what-does-nomodeset- do), which refers to an [Ubuntu Forum
