Tested on ThinkPad X240s: ThinkPad BIOS GIET52WW (2.00 ) Lenovo ThinkPad X240s, model 333 Hang issue is not reproduced. Loading i2c_i801 runtime didn't cause any issue. Booting with touchpad in smbus which using i2c_i801 module, Ubuntu 18.04 works fine, touchpad works fine. Log attached.

If fresh install used SynPS/2 touchpad, it should be that kmod add i2c_i801 in blacklist. In a newer kmod version, i2c_i801 is removed from blacklist. You can check /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Please add i2c_i801 in this blacklist. and update-initramfs -u -k . "lsmod |grep i2c" to check
