I think the LWN guide you quoted is outdated. Perhaps (personal
opinion) a better way is to go:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/sfr/linux-next/
get the patch out for each linux-next version and patch against the
particular rcX version in mainline as posted at
http://www.kernel.org
