Initially I was getting the message patch does not apply from git. I ran
it again with --ignore-whitespace and it applied, but IDK why it inserted
carriage returns. I thus removed them by hand.

Thanks for doing this work - config files instead of the registry
settings on Windows has been on my list forever and I never got round
to doing anything about it. So thanks for getting on and doing it as
well as tidying up the Linux files.
