I started using kicad recently but i used the autorouter in an interesting way that I may share: I place the components then run autorouter just to see what happens and then undo it. After routing manualy some area of the board, I repeatedly use autorouter+undo to evaluate the board. I can do this only with kicad because of it's high integration, and it did help a lot.
