FIDEL RECEIVES WARM WELCOME IN BRAZIL

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 29 (AIN)--A large number of Brazilians gave Commander
Fidel Castro a warm welcome upon his arrival to Rio de Janeiro in transit to
South Africa, where the Cuban leader will be attending the III World
Conference on Racism and other forms of discrimination.

Fidel arrived at around seven p.m. local time and he was met at the airport
by Anthony Garotinho Oliveira the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

This is Fidel's fifth visit to Brazil, a nation linked to Cuba by ties of
cooperation and friendship.

A large crowd gathered at the entrance of the Othon Palace Hotel, where the
Cuban President and the delegation that is traveling with him are staying.
"Long live Cuba" and "Long live Fidel" was heard many times from the
enthusiastic crowd that went to the Hotel to see the Cuban leader to let
him know how much they appreciate Cuba.

Fidel and Governor Garotinho exchanged points of view in relation to the
world economy and the economic situation of Brazil.

Governor Garotinho gave Fidel a book titled "Rio thinks about Brazil,"
dealing with alternative projects for the South American nation in the
context of globalization. Governor Garotinho wrote the foreword of the book,
and also gave to Fidel another book about Brazilian painters.

The leader of the Cuban Revolution is traveling to South Africa heading the
delegation that will be attending the World Summit about Racism.

FIDEL DEPARTS HAVANA TO ATTEND CONFERENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA

Havana, August 29 (AIN)--President Fidel Castro departed Havana Wednesday in
a trip that will take him to South Africa. Fidel will be heading the Cuban
delegation to the III World Conference against racism, xenophobia, and
related forms of intolerance, which will start its meetings in the city of
Durban on August 31.

The Cuban President was invited together with 28 other heads of state to
participate in this conference that is held under the auspices of the United
Nations and the South African government.

Cuba has had an outstanding participation in the preparatory tasks of this
world conference, which will serve the purpose of coordinating action
programs at a global level and against the severe forms of discrimination,
racial hate and xenophobia that persist in many parts of the world.

These evils, according to the note released, affect in a very special way
immigrants, minorities of an ethnic or racial nature, indigenous and
aborigines people, and other population groups in majority nations, with
their causes historically and closely linked to oppression and exploitation.
