AFP. 29 August 2001. Peruvian guerrillas reorganizing: military chief.

LIMA -- The Maoist Shining Path guerrilla group -- which waged a 12-year
war against Peru's government until it was crushed in 1992 -- is
reorganizing, the armed forces chief said Wednesday.

General Victor Bustamante said troops in rural areas of Peru had been
reinforced to combat the guerrilla resurgence, but denied media reports
that the military had
withdrawn from some areas.

"There are people in countersubversive bases in many parts of the
country," he said.

Clashes August 7 between the Maoist rebels and police in the central
Peruvian province of Satipo left at least 16 dead. It was Peru's worst
rebel incident in two years.
