Really? Just call me ignorant and out of date on such things. Still

Seriously, I was sure I read recently that it is required, and to be

Sportys SP400 includes anything you might need including ILS glideslope
and localizer for about $350. For a little extra you can get headset
adapter, extra 'change on the fly' battery pack, as well as adapter to
hook into cockpit power.

OOPS, think I misunderstood your situation - thought you were talking of
using just the handheld com/VOR.
Still, those radios have been approved by the FCC for use in aircraft,

rather than the only equipment, but hey, the FCC approves them in the
transceiver sense, and even the big boys often carry one as a last ditch
comm means. Not sure about the VOR aspect though, but likely that also

Thanks for the info. I have a Yaesu with vor. I'm looking at a panel mount like
a flight line 760 or even escort II. Do they need to be yellow tagged for

anything. I've found it difficult to easily talk to myself over the din
of cockpit noise in flight.
All, I believe we are getting close to launching the gathering site. John
Bouyea has been working on the mechanics and I've been putting together a hotel
and RV park list. As stated before the airfield has approved camping and a
large hanger is at our disposal.
