I should imagine that a carbon spring is "quite a bit of work", somewhat more than taking a length of junk yard spring steel, cutting and drilling a couple of holes in it. A piece of steel 12 x 1.5 x .25 will weigh just about 1 pound, whereas carbon composite would weigh approx 3 oz. If you are trying to get under 480 pounds empty, composite is the way to go, if you are contemplating fitting landing light, and want a starter motor it's probably not worth the bother.
