A number of years ago when Rich Shirley was at Oshkosh and was having
overheating issues with the Jabiru 3300 in his KR-1, I went to a seminar given
by a German aerodynamisist to see if I could learn anything useful. She stated
that cowl cheeks low on the sides was best location. Short of that, the lower
outboard corners would be the next best place. But somehow, I couldn't remember
what she said about the ratio of inlet vs. outlet areas.

Pete,

Google "thorp aircraft cooling exit area ratio" and you'll get some
pretty good hits on this. The ratios vary wildly, from 1:1 to 1:1.3 on
the Van's Air Force site thread at the top.
